For most of us, Crayola is synonymous with childhood inspiration. This holiday season, the ubiquitous brand wanted to refresh their traditional gift shopping experience and encourage parents to inspire their children in new ways. As part of our ongoing relationship with the brand, we redesigned their annual Gift Guide into a flexible, touchscreen-friendly platform that helps parents find the perfect gifts for kids of all ages. And beyond simply making a holiday shopping tool, we used a unique design approach to capture Crayola’s vivid product line and inspiring sense of creativity.

Visual Design

Color is at the heart of everything Crayola does, and it quickly became the guiding principle behind the Gift Guide’s visual identity. As a resource for parents to find the best gifts of the season, we made the site visually intuitive for users to easily navigate a curated selection of products that span a range of ages and activities.

But the Crayola brand is about more than just products, so we challenged ourselves to help bring them to life on-screen. As users browse different art supplies and activities, they’ll find unique design details made using actual Crayola products, giving a dynamic physical dimension to a digital shopping experience.

Adaptive Design

Knowing that today’s parents are increasingly more mobile, we built the new Gift Guide entirely with HTML5 so it’s ready for a myriad of devices. Using a mobile-first, adaptive design approach allowed us to make a dynamic platform that is easy to optimize for any type of screen. Whether on mobile, desktop, or tablet, the Gift Guide uniquely scales to an ideal view on any device. And rather than creating a framework that needs to be rebuilt for each season, we built the Gift Guide so that it can be easily re-purposed throughout the year.
