Careers
Internships

Our interns arrive from places as far away as Sydney, Australia (where bagels are non-existent) and as large as Houston, Texas (where the stars at night really are big and bright). That said, our internship program is mighty competitive and space is limited.
We provide discipline-based, immersive experiences, meaning interns specialize in one of four key areas: Design, Development, Production or Strategy. They work on internal and client projects, from concept to completion. Now, a few nuts and bolts...

Our Interns

Maria Cerase

LUISS University, Rome, Italy

“I couldn't dream of a better production experience than Big Spaceship's. I learned precious lessons about interactive production – lessons I will bring with me always. I definitely had a great time. Watch out for Big Spaceship! Cause it's rocking the digital world and I am so happy to have been a part of it.”
The Basics

How Big Spaceship internships work:

  • We offer internships in: Strategy, Production, Design and Development
  • Our program runs quarterly: Winter (Jan-March), Spring (March-June), Summer (June-Sept) and Autumn (Sept-Dec)
  • Application instructions and details on current openings are listed below, under each discipline
  • When you apply, remember to indicate which quarter you are interested in!

What you need to know:

  • Internships run between 3-6 months
  • Start and end dates are flexible (within our seasonal program)
  • We require a minimum of 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday)
  • We provide a base stipend starting at $400 per week
  • Securing housing is up to you, craigslist can certainly help
  • Non-US residents must arrange for a student visa and sponsorship independently (we can offer recommendations for sponsoring organizations)
  • Internships are intended for undergraduate students or recent grads who hold less than eight months experience in the job swimming pool – Graduate students (and beyond) are free to apply, but an internship shouldn't be interpreted as a way to get a job offer

Strategy Internship

Like any good strategist, you ask “why?” a lot. As a strategy intern, you'll spot and analyze research and trends, synthesizing your findings into presentations. Expect to scour the internet (incessantly), join our brainstorm sessions and contribute to our Think blog.

We typically hire one strategy intern per season, so you'll be busy working on internal projects as well as client engagements, all the while improving your written and vocal communication skills.

Application requirements: resume, cover letter, writing sample (your choice).

Summer: Open

Production Internship

So you're interested in interactve production. Then perhaps you noticed the obvious typo in the previous sentence? Producers are sticklers for details. They also have an affinity for organization, a given for a job that balances everything from budgets to timelines to the ever-important client relationship.

Among their chief duties, producers (interns included) guide and motivate their teams in order to keep projects moving efficiently. Expect to see such projects through completion while handling managerial duties large or small – or both, depending on your level of experience. Since we usually hire just one production intern per season, multi-tasking is a prerequisite.

Application requirements: resume, cover letter.

Design Internship

You'll work with a variety of digital media to design and build eye-popping work (think motion graphics, games, etc.). While specific responsibilities are reliant on previous experience, rest assured you’ll have ample opportunity to practice new skills and express your ideas in a collaborative, creative environment. Since we typically hire four design interns per season, you'll learn alongside fellow students too.

A general understanding of (and love for) digital design is essential, so make sure you've got a solid handle on composition, animation, motion graphics, video and typography. As for specific programs, you should have working knowledge of Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator. It'll help to know AfterEffects and 3D software too.

Application requirements: resume, cover letter, portfolio (online or electronic, please).

Development Internship

Our dev interns are not code monkeys. Far from it. A Big Spaceship internship will give you the opportunity to learn and apply a number of technologies, working closely with other developers on multi-disciplinary teams. You'll be included in all phases of a project, starting with creative concepting. We'll treat you like a full-time employee, in terms of responsibilities and time invested. On the flip side, you'll work hard and will be expected to add value to your team. (You’ll have fun too.)

We generally hire one dev intern per season. Interested applicants should have some knowledge of, and interest in learning about, some or all of the following: Actionscript, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, HTML, MySQL, Objective-C and more. Tech speak aside, a passion for experimenting, learning and innovating is a must.

Application requirements: resume, cover letter, code sample, link to portfolio (if applicable).
