The Original Nutmeg

In late April, we lost our beloved Nutmeg. As the first pup to roam our halls, she will forever be the original Big Spaceship dog.

A Löwchen (“little lion” in German), Nutmeg was a stoic canine, whose admiration was difficult to earn. Smart to the point of discernment, she had her favorites and didn't let just anyone linger by her side. Lest you think she was shrewd, know this: Underneath her gray fur was a heart that would bring the Tin Man to his knees.

A few of our fondest stories and memories...

I grew up with big, burly dogs. My whole family has them...greyhounds, deerhounds, collies and of course, boxers. For me, the bigger the better. I never thought I could love or connect with a little bitty “fancy” dog...until Nutmeg. Every morning, her first order of business was to run full speed ahead, jumping into my lap and onto my desk. I loved hearing the jingle of her leash down the hall. Though small in stature, her attitude and personality were huge. She will forever be my first fluffy puppy love.

When I first visited Big Spaceship's office last fall everyone warned me that Nutmeg, while appearing small and cute, actually had a bit of a mean streak. What they failed to mention was that Josh had expressly forbidden anyone to feed her. So my first day in the office I dropped bits of leftover tart on the floor for Nutmeg and she quickly warmed to me. So much so that when I left my chair unattended, Nutmeg would curl up in it and ferociously bark and snarl at anyone who came near. No one could figure out why Nutmeg took such a liking to me. It was our little secret, til now. I'll miss you, my adorably fierce little guard dog.

Nutmeg, I love thee deeply – though you used my trousers as a napkin kindly, at every opportunity.
- S. Jason Prohaska, General Manager

For a while last summer, Nutmeg "adopted" Linzi (one of our design interns) and me. She would come over and hop up on our laps or hang out underneath our desk. Sometimes she would curl up behind me on my chair...I'll never forget my own personal furry lumbar support.

Not one to shun the limelight, Nutmeg made it into a few of our easter eggs and starred in our 2000 holiday greeting...

One of our crew members even credits her with helping him land his job...

When I interviewed at Big Spaceship, Nutmeg was a wee puppy, still teething. I was a nervous wreck...scared out of my mind, expecting to tank. I arrived early and was asked if I wanted to watch a then baby Nutmeg while Josh (who was gonna interview me) finished his lunch. I did. She began tearing my hands to shreds, gnawing my knuckles raw over the next 30 minutes. When the interview finally started, I was in too much pain to be nervous. Four years later, here I am.

And here she is as proof that nobody at Big Spaceship is safe from Dave’s Photoshop skills:

Josh, our Minister of Technology (and Nutmeg’s keeper), now has a new puppy, Rosemary. While Rosie is pretty damn awesome, there’s no replacing Nutmeg. She will forever remain in our hearts.

Goodbye, dear friend.

That's really sad. Nutmeg was great.

That's really sad, I am sure Nutmeg is in Heaven with the recent FB pooch that just passed away as well playing ping pong in the great digial shop in the sky.

When i left BSS she was still there, and in my mind, when I think about last summer, she is always there. Protagonist of the picture, queen of the office. Too bad without you, Nutmeg. T__T

Nutmeg was probably the smartest dog I've ever met, and definitely one of the best. She was hilarious and sweet and fluffy and fun as hell. She'll be very, very missed.

I was one of Nutmeg's chosen few and I considered it an honor. She would often curl up behind me on my chair, like lumbar support. I miss her.
