(Re)Meet the Team Behind Think

We know, we know.  Things have been a little bit slow here at Think as we’ve moved into 2010, but one of our resolutions for the year is to change that.  Things have been busier than ever, but we’re eager to commit more time to sharing our thoughts, ideas and observations — and, selfishly, even more eager to learn from the wide range of experts, innovators and generally thoughtful, opinionated and diverse readers who take the time to join us and share their comments.

Since we’re more interested in conversation than monologue, we wanted to take a moment to introduce — or re-introduce — the diverse group of people behind the blog.  Below, a quick self-introduction from each of our contributors… and if you follow this blog, we’d love for you to introduce yourself in the comments.

Ivan Askwith (@ivanovitch)

“Professional credentials and experience aside, my career and personal life seem to revolve around the same three themes: a love of solving problems, a desire to learn as much as possible about as many things as possible, and an instinctive obsession for finding the connections between everything. Throughout my undergrad (at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study) and grad studies (in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies program), I’ve been focused on the way that digital technologies change human experience, relationships and values.  Combine that with a desire to use ideas to guide the creation of actual “stuff”, and add in a deep fascination with transmedia, serial narrative, online communities, behavioral economics, game design and psychology, and you’ll have a good sense of what catches my interest.  That’s the stuff I tend to write about.”

Chris Cocca (@chriscocca)

“I’ve been here and there and back again. I started with Big Spaceship in 2007, as a User Experience designer. After spending a couple of years back in my natural habitat (Toronto, Canada) working in digital media, I’ve made my way back to Brooklyn and Big Spaceship as a senior strategist.  Before work, I had the chance to do my master’s degree at University of Toronto’s i-school. Much of my fun at work involves strategizing and making things that make clients happy by making their users happy. Outside of work, I play some basketball, some x-box (for research purposes, of course) and run around the city with my soon-to-be wife doing fun stuff.”

Jessica Berta (@jeccaberta)

“Nearly two years ago to the day, I joined Big Spaceship with stars in my eyes. Prior to that, I worked in public service, affecting social change with the likes of McGruff the Crime Dog. The non-profit world, bless it, can trudge like molasses. I wanted to run with technology — to experience and shape how it cultivates (and trivializes) our lives. I now look forward to escaping from it on occasion. As a copywriter and member of the Strategy team, I use words and voices to inform, enthuse, and, if we’re lucky, move mountains. Beyond the Ship, my writing extends into journalism, fiction and satire. I live and play in Brooklyn, where the birds look down on a wry optimist humming Neko Case songs.”

Melissa Andrada (@themelissard)

“A serial resident tourist, I’ve lived in five different cities on three different continents the past five years. I was born in Nigeria, but was raised in Seattle where I studied urban memory, visual culture, and the Holocaust at the University of Washington. I recently finished my master’s degree in Cultural Studies at the University of Edinburgh where I researched the branding of teaching English in South Korea. When I’m not at Big Spaceship, I can be found exploring the city via foursquare, scheming ways to make the world a better place, and eating way too much mochi ice cream.”

Jim Babb (@jimbabb)

“Upon introduction, people often mistake me for Brad Pitt gone geek. Quickly, before the hysteria begins, I need to clarify that I am just a handsome transmedia storyteller. While their shock is subsiding, I tell them about my most recent project; the critically-acclaimed indie alternate reality game, Must Love Robots. This ARG helped me to explore my fascination with combining storytelling and gameplay to create unique and dynamic audience experiences. I am endlessly inspired by the sandbox-like-environment of technology which enables the democratic creation and sharing of content, and have a deep background in game mechanics and theory.  I am currently wrapping up my Master’s in Media Studies at The New School. Oh, and I love board games… almost forgot about that. I really love board games.”

Josh Teixeira (@foughtthebattle)

“I finally found my way to Big Spaceship via a long and winding road that’s seen me wear many hats: investment banking refugee, failed boy band sound engineer, surgically-repaired ex-skateboarder, obsessive record collector of obscure hardcore, red sox worrywart, perpetual lapsed-catholic curmudgeon, enjoyer of guinness, and compulsive organizer of objects, to name a few. I’m excited to apply this strange mix of influences to my strategy work, and when not at the ‘ship I can usually be found exploring Brooklyn.”

Victor Pineiro (@victorpineiro)

“I usually find myself at the intersection of storytelling, social media and gaming.  I wrote and produced the award-winning documentary on virtual worlds Second Skin which premiered at SXSW ’08, did the festival circuit and was released theatrically summer ’09.  My favorite aspect of the three year process was cultivating an online community through blogging and social media, so I ended up jumping headlong into that next, managing a number of social media campaigns for various clients.  I’m the managing editor of Popten, a group pop culture/top ten blog, and am an occasional contributor to magazines like Psychology Today and Vice.  I’ve also written a bunch of screenplays, one of which ended up a Sundance Film Lab finalist, and another which is currently in development.”

So that’s us.  The range of interests we’ve listed here should give you some sense of the perspectives we bring to our work here at Big Spaceship, and our contributions here in Think.  But that’s still only half the picture, so please: take 30 seconds and introduce yourself to everyone in the comments!
